Yancha - Prize-winning Huang Guan Yin 获奖黄观音

Price

$6.88

The new version 2022 comes from the same plantation as the 2021 version, and was processed by the same factory, but slightly heavier toasted in comparison with the 2021 production, as well as there is some subtle difference according to the harvest of the year and the subsequent production. It is fun to discover the nuance between them, as well as to perceive how the same tea goes aging.

The 2022 version may possibly contain some broken leaves since the inner box was omitted by error, which is the only reason that it is cheaper than the 2021 version.

(Updated in April 2023)

Huang Guan Yin probably is one of the most popular new varietals. It is an artificial hybrid species (No. 105) created between 1977-1997, originating from Tie Guanyin as its maternal plant and its paternal plant Huang Dan (also known as Huang Jin Gui). As both of the parental plants are classical fine varietals, Huang Guan Yin is doomed to be an excellent one. It is very tasty and highly aromatic, perfect for processing Oolong tea, although it is also used for green tea and black tea. If you are curious about the performance while it is made into Yancha, our 2021 Prize-wining Huang Guan Yin is a brilliant model.

Quite frankly the competition in which this tea won the prize is not a top one, however, if you know where the competition was held, you will understand its value. It was in Xiamen, one of the biggest Yancha consumer cities in China and also, the pickiest places about it. Being such a fragrant and flavorful competitor, it's logical that this tea won the prize in Xiamen. Our 2021 Prize-wining Huang Guan Yin brings penetrating floral scents, reminding us of many sweet white flowers like gardenia, magnolia and including a hint of Jazmin, etc, both in the steeped leaves and on the lid of the Gaiwan, as well as in the liquor together with some honey notes; it also provides a well-balanced liquor with lingering sweetness and energy in it, and also, a thick and round mouthfeel.

Review(s) From Tea Blogger(s)

@arden_teanote (USA): ...Elegant floral and sweet fragrance...I could taste some fresh crispy green notes I usually get from Dong Ding Oolong. Nothing is overpowered by other notes, everything is balanced really well in this tea...(read the full article)

@tempest_in_a_gaiwan (USA):... I can taste and smell why this yancha is prize-winning! It's incredibly aromatic. As soon as you open the cute little square package, your tea space is filled with the sweetness! The dry leaf reminds me of warm honey-sweetened cherry jam and the wet leaf is intense with tropical fruits and florals. And the taste is probably the best yancha I've ever tasted. It has the aromatics, fruity sweetness, thick mouthfeel and all perfectly balanced with rock rhyme. This tea is impressive!...(read the full article)
