Pan Hu was created in Qing dynasty. It is indeed a classic design of Yixing pot, and also, one of the very few pots that are named after a personage, as Pan Hu means Pan's Pot and Pan refers to Pan Shicheng (1804-1873), a wealthy merchant and dignitary bureaucrat who lived in Canton. Pan had good taste for artwork since he was also a great collector of classic books and ancient calligraphy and paintings. He and his family were in the habit of drinking tea, so he commissioned personalized teapots in Yixing for family use and also for social purposes as gifts, so this teapot was created specifically for him. Then, this elegant creation became so popular that in his region Pan Hu was even used as a customary dowry for daughters.

About the Calligraphy

然香画 : burn incense and appreciate paintings.

This calligraphy engraved on our Pan Hu is a reproduction of an excellent work of Fan Zeng, who is a contemporary Chinese master pinter and calligrapher. It reminds us of a classy and artistic scene: surrounded by the fragrance of incense, with a tea in the hand, enjoying fine painting and calligraphy...

The photos were taken under natural light and not edited. There may be subtle nuance when you see the teapot under different lighting.
